Penhas Douradas, what to expect on this tour
The main objective of this tour is to get to know Penhas Douradas. But beyond this place of great historical and scenic interest, there are other equally interesting points on this tour.
You will start at Cruz das Jugadas with views to the peaks of Estrela. Next is Campo Romão, a plateau site where rye cultivation and grazing predominate. You will also visit the Meteorological Observatory of Penhas Douradas, the source of the Mondego River and the Rossim Valley. In this bathing area you can cool off on the hottest summer days.
Afterwards, the journey continues towards the typical houses of the area, through beautiful forests. There are also panoramic views of the mountains and the town of Manteigas.
On the way back, you’ll go through Carvalheira. A dense forest of large resinous trees.
An excellent way to discover one of the most beautiful and unique areas of Serra da Estrela.

Cycle Touring option:
- Total: 29 km; 750 metres positive gradient.
- 8 km dirt roads.
- 21 km paved roads with few traffic. (6km main road and 15Km secondary roads).
- Technical difficulty: Easy.
- Physical difficulty: Easy.
Beginners mountain bike version:
- Total: 25 km; 800 m positive gradient.
- 17km off-road (mountain roads and Roman pavements).
- 8km on paved roads with little traffic (2.5km on the national road and 5.5km on secondary roads).
- Technical difficulty: Medium.
- Physical difficulty: Easy.
You should bring comfortable cycling clothes, water and snacks for reinforcement.
Minimum height for electric bike hire is 1.50 metres.
