What to expect on this e-bike trip
This multi-day e-bike journey offers a complete and authentic way to explore Serra da Estrela, mainland Portugal’s highest mountain range, combining iconic landscapes with quieter, lesser-known areas of the mountain.
Along the route, you will ride across high-altitude plateaus, deep valleys, mountain roads and rural tracks, passing through areas where tourism remains discreet, while also reaching some of the most striking and recognisable landscapes of Serra da Estrela. This balance allows you to experience the mountain in its full diversity — from its wild, remote side to its most emblematic scenery.
The entire itinerary takes place within the Estrela UNESCO Global Geopark, where the marks left by ancient glaciers are still clearly visible. These unique geological formations have shaped the mountain over thousands of years, creating a powerful and varied natural setting that is ideal to explore by e-bike.
Serra da Estrela is also a living mountain. On several stages, you ride through areas where traditional shepherding is still part of everyday life, with flocks and shepherds continuing to shape the landscape and preserve ancestral ways of living. This contact with local life adds a deeply authentic dimension to the journey.
Beyond cycling, the experience invites you to slow down and absorb the territory — through the landscapes, local culture and mountain gastronomy, closely connected to regional products and the wines of Dão and Beira Interior.

Day by day — Serra da Estrela E-Bike Tour

Day 1
Arrival in Belmonte and check-in at your accommodation.
Delivery of the e-bikes, equipment adjustment and a welcome briefing with a local guide, where the route, logistics and practical details of the journey are explained.
This is a relaxed day, designed to arrive calmly, explore the village and ease into the rhythm of the trip.
Day 2
Distance: approx. 36 – 45 km
Elevation gain: approx. 1.000 – 1.350 m
Terrain: 70% rural and mountain tracks · 30% secondary roads
Leaving the flatter landscapes behind, you ride towards Serra da Estrela.
Valleys become deeper and the mountain begins to dominate the scenery.
Arrival in Folgosinho, a mountain village with wide open views, marks the entry into a higher, quieter and more authentic territory.
Day 3
Distance: approx. 38 – 45 km
Elevation gain: approx. 1.000 – 1.500 m
Terrain: 70% rural and mountain tracks · 30% secondary roads
Visit Linhares da Beira, the only Historic Village of Portugal located within Serra da Estrela.
Cross the plateau and descend into the Manteigas Valley, one of the most emblematic areas of the mountain, known for its open landscapes, silence and strong mountain character.
Arrival in Manteigas or Penhas Douradas, depending on the accommodation selected.
Day 4
Distance: approx. 30 – 60 km (fully customised route)
Elevation gain: approx. 900 – 1.600 m
Manteigas sits at the centre of Serra da Estrela Natural Park and offers countless possibilities for exploration.
This day is fully adaptable:
you may ride through some of the mountain’s most impressive scenery, cross high-altitude forests and glacial valleys — or choose a lighter day, adjusted entirely to your rhythm.
Day 5
Distance: approx. 35 – 50 km
Elevation gain: approx. 1.000 – 1.500 m
The final cycling day links Manteigas to Penhas da Saúde, one of the highest settlements in Portugal.
Several route options are possible for this stage:
through the Zêzere Glacial Valley or via higher-altitude areas, offering wide landscapes and views towards the highest points of Serra da Estrela.
Day 6
End of the e-bike journey.
A transfer back to the starting point or another previously agreed location is included.
